Cree calls for firework safety in North Down
Ulster Unionist MLA and Northern Ireland Policing Board member Leslie Cree has called for the responsible enjoyment of fireworks in the run-up to Halloween in North Down. Last year, 32 persons were injured over the Halloween period in 2008 which was a 67% decrease from the 2007 figure.
Mr Cree said, “Going to a fireworks display is a fun event for the whole family. The best way to enjoy fireworks is in a safe, controlled environment adhering to strict safety regulations.
North Down has the pleasure of hosting a much-treasured fireworks display at Seapark - clearly, a safe way to enjoy a fireworks display and a memorable occasion for all.
Last year, over 80% of those injured were male and two thirds were under 18. This highlights the dangers of fireworks for our children and young people. Wrist, hand and eye injuries are the most common and these can result in long-lasting, debilitating injuries.
To our children and young people, I would say fireworks are dangerous – they are explosives and cause injuries. Also, it is against the law to carry fireworks in public if you are under 18.
Parents and responsible adults must ensure that the dangers of fireworks are effectively communicated to our young people so that we avoid severe injuries and fatalities.
If you want to buy, store and use fireworks for a garden display you must get a licence. The fee for a fireworks licence (where the number of spectators is less than 100) is £30 and application forms are available from the Northern Ireland Office.
Let’s enjoy fireworks this Halloween and make it a fun, family time to be remembered for all the right reasons.”
