Cree commends PSNI crackdown on burglary

Speaking following the recent increase in domestic burglaries in Northern Ireland Ulster Unionist MLA and Policing Board member Leslie Cree has commended the PSNI crackdown on burglars resulting in 28 charges in the past month throughout Belfast and Greater Belfast.

Mr. Cree said, "Last week’s figures showed a 3.6% increase in domestic burglaries which amounted to 186 additional burglaries in Northern Ireland, approximately four more each week. Whilst we should be concerned about any increase in crime, these figures must not be viewed as an epidemic – England and Wales have also seen a similar increase. The PSNI are responding to this increase and are tackling the perpetrators of these crimes which generate such fear and anxiety within local communities.

"The fear of crime has a detrimental impact upon our community, particularly amongst the most vulnerable. I would call upon the PSNI to continue in their concerted efforts to so that we can not only alleviate fears but we see increased charges against these perpetrators.

"However, I would urge the PSNI to extend their crackdown to rural areas. People living outside Greater Belfast need reassurance that crime in their area is equally targeted. Criminals must know that they will be swiftly and robustly dealt with wherever there are breaking the law."
